Lake Tansi Email Blast from the Lake Tansi POA General Manager and Board of Directors

EMAIL BLAST FROM 7-22-26                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              At the June 25th Board Meeting, it was announced that we will be draining Lake Mohawk this year and Lake Tansi in the fall of 2027.
On July 7th, an article titled “Draining of the Lakes” was submitted to the Crossville Chronicle for publication in the Smoke Signals. This article should arrive in your mailboxes within the next week.
In the past we have lowered Lake Tansi every three years. Here is the reason behind the Board of Directors’ decision to modify the schedule this year.
In 2024, Lake Mohawk was drained for the first time in several years. ACC permits were approved for work. Lowering the lake went without issue until December when heavy rainfall filled it before work could be completed. Then three property owners received approved State permits for dredging.
In 2025, we once again began the process of lowering Lake Mohawk. Due to issues with the siphon and rainfall, the lake was not lowered to an adequate level to complete the work.
Fortunately, one of our own members stepped forward to help. This member volunteered countless hours researching a long-term solution. His work included researching the required permits, designing improvements to the siphon system, and developing plans to protect both the existing and new PVC piping for years to come. The materials have been purchased and we are working to get the new siphons installed this summer.
The Board of Directors took 2 things into consideration concerning the drawdown of the lakes. Lowering a lake requires our Maintenance Department to monitor water levels and the siphon system regularly. This siphon system at Lake Mohawk is a new design. While we hope there are no issues, the reality is that any new system can present unexpected challenges once it is put into service. If an issue arises, staff must be available to respond quickly. The Board also considered the availability of specialized contractors who repair seawalls and build waterfront docks. If both lakes were lowered at the same time, staff and contractors could become stretched too thin.
For that reason, the Board voted to lower Lake Mohawk in 2026 and schedule the Lake Tansi drawdown for 2027. Staggering the schedule allows our staff to focus on one lake at a time, gives members better access to contractors, and helps ensure each drawdown is completed successfully.
The Board of Directors met Tuesday, July 21 in an open work session. We verified that the ACC has not approved any permits for Lake Tansi. Since Lake Mohawk has approved permits and will use a new siphon, our staff needs to be available to handle any potential issues.

In order to ensure fairness, accountability, and understanding of Lake Tansi amenity usage, I would like to clarify the member, family, and guest card requirements.

The following procedures are intended to ensure that amenities are used only by authorized persons.

Cards must be shown at all amenities in order to gain entry.  If a member’s ID card has a picture that matches the member, no further action is required.  If the member card does not have a picture, then a photo ID must also be presented. This would apply to all adults.  If the name on the member ID card presented does not match the name on the picture ID presented, the member card will be held by the employee and turned into the POA Office.  All adult immediate family or guest card presented also require a picture ID card to be presented with the name on both matching.  If the name on the immediate family or guest card presented does not match the name on the picture ID presented, the guest card will be held by the employee and turned into the POA Office.
